Arisaka Type 38 Carbine,6.5x50mmSR Arisaka$1450

Howdy Town-postians! I've got an uncommon and handy little Japanese rifle for ya!
I picked this rifle up in a rather sorry state and have since had it brought back to a respectable appearance and function. It was cracked at the wrist and had lots of dents in the stock. They've all been steamed out and the crack was professionally repaired with acryglass. The repair is quite difficult to spot and blends in with the rest of the wood grain pretty well. There was very little finish left on the stock when I got it and the whole stock needed to be redone. Arisakas are often made from Katsura wood which is on the softer end of hardwoods and is quite light so finding them is a sorry state is fairly typical. These rifles were most often finished with a type of lacquer called Urushi that is from an Asian variety of poison sumac called the Chinese lacquer tree and it's not the most durable finish out there. This was refinished with urethanes and some stain to more closely resemble the red hue of the traditional Urushi finish.
The metal is in fair/good condition overall. The bore is a bit worn but still very shootable. There's some light pitting on the receiver but nothing too bad. Ground mum. No cleaning rod which is typical. Reproductions are available for sale nowadays and the odd original pops up on ebay from time to time.
These were issued to engineers, cavalry, auxiliary and specialty troops and are far less common than the full length rifle version of the type 38.
Overall a light and handy little carbine with some neat history. The carbine has a barrel length of approximately 19.4 inches (493 mm), compared to the rifle's 31.4 inches (798 mm). So pretty handy.
